Madagascar is a hotspot of biodiversity, with over 90% of the island’s wildlife found nowhere else in the world. The national flag’s red and white colors pay homage to the Merina Kingdom (the state that dominated most of the island before French rule), while the green is a nod to the Hova, the class of commoners who played a major role in the island’s bid for independence against France.
